THE BEE

After many hours of drawing I can finally reveal the next image in my 'Earth Series'. This time I have chosen to focus the message of my drawing on the plight of the honeybee. The quote I have used is from Saint John Chrysostom who was archbishop of Constantinople, 347-407. The bee in occult tradition interested me and I chose to focus my drawing once again around a female figure because as a pollinator ruled by a queen, the bee is often considered a symbol of the Goddess or Divine Feminine, in particular Venus.

In recent years there has been a worrying decline in honeybee populations in fact, 'in the UK, around one fifth of honeybee hives were lost in the winter of 2008/9. Bees pollinate a third of the food we eat, and this contributes £200million a year to the UK economy.' We can help bees by eating organic, planting wild flowers and keeping bees. Hello there! Apologies for the lack of blogging in recent months, but as the below photos prove my mural commission for Shine on the Green has been keeping me very busy! The completed mural was installed on sunday 17th of October and after a wonderful unveiling evening can now be viewed by the public and passers by. If you are travelling through Newington Green in North London be sure to keep an eye out for this psychedelic nod to nature.

Here's my finished mural design for the organic hairdressing salon. The idea was to create a swirling pattern that flows across the wall and which on closer inspection reveals hair made from foliage. I'm very excited to start painting now!

My friend Loveday invited me to be part of a fine art, crafts and gifts exhibition that will be on in her wonderful little gallery in Maldon in Essex throughout July and August. I will be selling four framed prints, greetings cards and printed totes.

Island gallery is on Downs Road and will be open fridays, saturdays and sundays 11 - 4. Great excuse to get to the seaside and pick up some one off original art pieces!

Hey there! I'm going to have some work in Spot The Tiger's exhibition which will be on for two weeks at the Dreamspace Gallery on Dufferin Street. I'm really keen to collaborate with my very talented photographer friend Mr Panos Lyris. The plan is for me to use his photographs to collage with. I experimented with this lovely photo of Anna. I thought that her pale skin and blue lips made her look like a sea siren so I painted an eel to keep her company. Still a work in progress....

Phew! It's been a crazy few months with not enough blogging, time for a quick catch up..

Most of April I spent working on a very fun project for Honda with my studio buddies Hattie Newman and Sarah Parker. We made a paper world for their brochure and I'm really pleased with the results, (will be posting the photos as soon as we get them!).

Since then I've also helped the very busy paper master Hattie out on the image above for Adventure Ecology and an animation for Sony's website.

The design we entered for Apostrophe cafe's competition (see below) was picked by a panel of judges (including Ralph Ward-Jackson, director of Art London and Lynda Ralph-Knight, editor of Design Week) to be one of the eleven finalists, hoorah! Our vinyl will be on display on the window of the Notting Hill branch from now until 10th January.

I was just lamenting about how lovely the summer was when I suddenly remembered that I completely forgot to put some pictures up of the set Sarah Parker and I designed and made for Bompas & Parr's contribution to the V&A village fete this year. The inventive jellymongers had the genius idea of playing Operation with a real live person. Only problem was that Sarah and I had to make a clever table that would allow this optical illusion to happen...mmmm...jellied organs.

TATE TAKEOVER

Thanks to DIY WOMP, RAW CANVAS and everyone else who helped put on the great evening at the Turbine Bridge of the Tate on Saturday, I think the creation of an Anne Robinson vodoo doll was my personal highlight of the evening, (congratulations to whomever was responsible for this). Unfortunately I do not have much pictorial evidence of the night as my camera spazzed out. Click here to see some normal photography of the night.

Above, is my piece that was exhibited in response to the theme deconstruction/ reconstruction. I used found imagery to create a new image that explores the idea of Globalization in major European cities like London. In such cities in recent years, a 'western' cultural tradition has been deconstructed and reconstructed to include world wide influences which in turn has created a new intricate and messy pattern of cultures for the cities.

Well it's been a long time coming, but I've been drawing super hard and finally here it is! A new piece I've been working on entitled 'Mother Earth'. Despite the subject matter being a current issue the quote is actually an ancient Native American saying that I first saw in the Natural History museum in NYC.

I am intending to make a series of drawings which highlight different environmental issues and after watching the amazing 'Vanishing of the Bees' documentary yesterday I have decided that my next drawing should flag up this increasingly worrying bee disaster.

Yesterday I delivered my postbox designs to four locations in Shotley and Felixstowe. Posters on the back of the boxes explain the project and the postcards for the project can be found on the front. BIG CHILL EXHIBITION

Well, there has certainly been some sun of late which means it must be getting near the festival time of year. The Big Chill have decided to have an exhibition of all the artists/illustrators involved in promoting the festival this year. If you are near the Big Chill House in King's Cross stop by and have a look. The private view was on Thursday and all artists involved signed prints of their work which are available to buy here and all proceeds will go to Amnesty International, lovely! Hello! I am currently involved in an exciting project for Suffolk Council to encourage members of different communities in Suffolk to share their memories of their local areas. The project consists of postcard designs and postboxes, culminating in an exhibition of the memory cards accompanied by a classical music performance, phew!

Hello there, I have had a lovely busy week working on the Watchmen event for Future Cinema. Sarah Parker and I designed and created the three cut-outs (photographed below) for Bryony Birkbeck and Lucy Yates's wonderfully atmospheric 50s diner set. An exciting and surreal night was had by all, an American army tank was even spotted roaring through London Bridge, blimey! To see more photos of the event click HERE.

This is a poster design that I recently completed for The Big Chill festival 2009. The Big Chill asked 32 artists to work on this project to illustrate the festival, giving each artist a different theme to respond to based on past festival goers comments. My given theme was 'Remember the love'.

Above is an illustration I did for the mixtape article in NYLON magazine's March 2009 issue. The fictional mixtape was compiled by Matt Tong of Bloc Party and involved LL Cool J, Francoise Hardy, mind melting, PCP and all sorts.

Mr Gildersleeve of the design collective Evening Tweed is making what is sure to be a wonderful book featuring the work of all the lovely folks that were in New York together last year. The project is called New York Niceties for which I am contributing the above piece. Marcroy likes to call it 'Gouache Labyrinth Panda' I however have entitled it 'Beyond the self'. It is a gouache painting with indian ink inspired by images that I found in the archives of the New York public library and philosophy that I was reading at the time.
